Bridging Specialized SHM Engineering Education in India

In India, specialized Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) engineering is rarely taught as an integrated hands-on discipline at the undergraduate level due to multi-lakh equipment costs. GARRF introduces a zero-cost, open-access solution.

Using smartphone embedded sensors, Piezoelectric (PZT) transducer theory, and electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) signal processing, students can execute real-time structural inspection experiments directly in their web browser.

Structured Learning Curriculum

5 Progressive Experiential Levels

This suite is organized into 5 structured levels starting from basic, zero-hardware smartphone sensing to advanced high-frequency aerospace structural health monitoring.

L1: Smartphone Sensing L2: PZT Impact L3: Pitch-Catch L4: FFT Spectrum L5: Aero EMI & SHM

Experimental Hierarchy (Level 1 to Level 5)

LEVEL 1: BASIC SENSING

1. Smartphone Vibration & Motion Suite

Know structural vibrations by placing your mobile phone on any structure (beams, bridges, motors). Captures real-time acceleration ($a_x, a_y, a_z$) and rotational velocity using embedded IMU sensors without extra hardware.

LEVEL 2: PZT IMPACT

2. PZT Impact Test Analyzer

Simulates piezoelectric strain response under transient physical impact excitation. Analyzes high-voltage stress wave peaks, decay time constants, and dynamic energy conversion.

LEVEL 3: PITCH-CATCH

3. Single-Phone Pitch-Catch Active Sensing

Single smartphone transmits acoustic tone pulse trains through structural surfaces and measures attenuation via onboard microphone. Computes time-of-flight (ToF).

LEVEL 3: DUAL PHONE

4. Dual-Phone Wireless Pitch-Catch Testbed

Two smartphones synchronized over web sockets. One phone acts as actuator ("Actuator Phone") and second as sensor ("Receiver Phone") across structural spans.

LEVEL 4: SPECTRUM

5. FFT Spectrum & Frequency Suite

Converts raw time-domain vibration streams into frequency spectra using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm to isolate natural modes and resonance frequencies.

LEVEL 5: ADVANCED AERO

6. Aero Electro-Mechanical Impedance (EMI)

High-frequency coupled electromechanical impedance model for aerospace panels and fuselage joints. Calculates complex admittance $Y(\omega)$ shifts under localized damage.

LEVEL 5: RESEARCH SHM

7. PZT Structural Health Monitoring System

Comprehensive PZT SHM evaluation platform integrating electromechanical impedance (EMI) spectra, baseline subtraction, Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD), and damage index metrics.
